I HEAR VOICES THEATRE COMPANY

DARREN GOODING - writer, director & performer

Darren is co-founder of IHVTC and the creative force behind Truelove Tours Theatre Co. He is known for his complicated, quirky and phenomenally long one man shows including the  “Leopold Thorn” plays, “Manly Truelove” monologues and “Civic Ceremonial” film series for Colchester Comedy Festival. He also gigs as a cabaret compere, character comedian and magician with the performers of Nothing Up Our Sleeves. 6 cats!

DARREN TANSLEY - composer & sound engineer

Darren spent his twenties and thirties recording albums and videos with a variety of folk, rock and punk bands including Blyth Power, The Wickermen, and Jack's Family. He has played every type of venue imaginable (small pubs to sports stadiums) from the Isle of Skye to Melbourne in Australia. He is now composer in residence for IHVTC - as well as recording his own work - as they can't afford anyone better. He has a dog.

DAMIEN BELL - writer, director & performer

Damien obtained his B.A. (Hons) in Performing Arts at the University of Hertfordshire where he devised a twenty minute production of The Tempest on roller-skates and wrote a play about bats performed up a tree. He is co-founder of IHVTC and is the creator of Tea with Lady Breakneck. Damien can often be found swearing at computers for not working but also practises tai-chi, iaido and kenbu, (Japanese sword dance). He has a cat.

DAVE HUGHES - performer

An unpopular—indeed, widely disliked—solo performer of last resort on the local comedy circuit, Dave is also in a double-act called Chutzpah and Hubris. Dave has played the neurotic, toadying and fantastically repressed Mr Tymperleys in the last three Colchester Comedy Festivals. He likes to relax doing comedy podcasts with the only friends he has: I Hear Voices (who also despise him). He has three cats, one dog and six chickens.

Meet the company

MARY BOLLAN - performer

Mary got involved in IHVTC because she gets bored easily and IHVTC didn't know a lot of gullible women. Luckily, IHVTC has turned out to be a lot of fun and Mary turned out to be able to read a script in silly voices. Mary also likes knitting, reading, alternative music and in the day-times works for an international trade union federation which she likes a lot. She has four cats.

DEAN ALLEN JONES - warm-up artist

Forbidden to take up acting under the Weapon of Mass Destruction Laws, Dean has been forced to find other outlets for his creative urges. Gaining at least local fame as a magician, Dean sometimes provides warm up performances at our shows as well as wrangling the audiences and convincing them to say the right things in the right places. Currently he is learning to play the ukulele, just to taunt Richard Potter. He has two cats.

GERRY MCKEE - performer

An ex printer [The Artist that formerly Prints]. Have written poems and plays for BBC radio. [In one of which was called upon to whistle.]  Frequent lurking appearances as an extra in Mercury Theatre productions. Oldest member of I Hear Voices by several light years. So old, he can remember Danny and the Juniors and Rambling Syd Rumpo. It is not known if Gerry has any pets.

RICHARD POTTER - performer & Foley artist

Found loitering behind an abandoned bank in the midst of Colchester, Richard has assisted with digital sound effects, performed Foley and recently been allowed to make vocal noises for I Hear Voices. He is also a first rate local bass player, second rate rock DJ and third rate amateur swordsman. He lives somewhere near a train track. He keeps snakes.

SARA JANE DERRICK - performer

After leaving drama school Sara spent years touring the country playing anything from ladies in posh frocks to fluffy animals, Shakespeare to Noddy, from Inverness to The Minack, Cornwall. She has worked with BBC Radio Four and loves the freedom of Radio Drama (i.e. she doesn't have to play short and scrawny). She is a storyteller both for children and adults (meaning ghosts and legends). She has an old, blind, toothless dog.

SARAH-ELLEN YOUNG - performer

Sarah-Ellen is an active participant of the Colchester theatre scene. She particularly enjoys character roles and being thoroughly silly, hence her membership of I Hear Voices. She also enjoys singing and takes part in concerts and musicals as well as performing in plays and our live podcasts.

She keeps a budgie.

MATTHEW ORCHARD - Foley artist

Matthew is is a qualified electrician and part time noise maker, dragged in at the last minute to open and shut a miniature door and hit, shake and generally make sounds with odd things.
